Abstract:

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Show me your cemeteries and I will tell you what kind of people you have.” There are some 14,000 cemeteries in Texas alone, many of which have fallen or are falling into disrepair. We have been applying near-surface geophysical methods to locate unmarked burials to assist in refurbishing some of these, in particular, historic African-American cemeteries in the Houston, Texas area.

Assisting in this restoration effort is profoundly important on social, historical, and spiritual grounds to preserve the dignity of these sacred places. We are currently working with four historic cemeteries (Conroe Community, Evergreen Negro, Olivewood, and College Park Cemeteries). By integrating aerial drone, ground-penetrating radar, soil and foliage anomalies, and metal detection data along with cultural indicators, we have been locating burials for commemoration as well as outlining future development areas that do not show evidence of burials.
