SIPES Field Trip to the Palo Duro Canyon – May 3 to 5, 2019

To All AIPG Members:

Here is the announcement on the SIPES Dallas Field Trip to the Palo Duro Canyon. Dr. Holbrook (TCU sedimentology professor) has been instrumental in getting this field trip together. He has a graduate student, Grayson Lamb, who has been studying the Dockum Group in the canyon for his master’s thesis. Apparently Grayson has encountered some really interesting aspects of the Dockum Group.

AIPG Field Trip to Canyon Dam Gorge & San Pedro Springs – February 3, 2019

NOTICE: FIELD TRIP IS NOW BOOKED UP (FULL) and REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.

Attention all AIPG Texas Members:

A field trip is to be held to examine the fascinating structural geology, as well as the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Glen Rose formation, in the Canyon Dam Gorge near New Braunfels. This will be held in connection with the AIPG National Board Meeting to be held in San Antonio. This field trip offers an opportunity for face-time with your National and local section AIPG Board Members.

We will also visit historic San Pedro Springs, the original site of the settlement of San Antonio

Date: Sunday, Feb. 3rd, 2019.
Time: 8.00 am to 4.00 pm.
Meet: Drury Inn San Antonio Airport: 95 NE Interstate 410 Loop, San Antonio, TX 78216
Leader: Dr. Tom Ewing, author of “Texas through Time” and others.
Cost: about $50 per person.
Clothing: stout walking shoes, a walking stick if needed. Rain gear depending on forecast.
Tools: hand lens, penknife, dilute HCl, camera, notebook. Also bring water.

Petrossian and Team Release TWDB Transborder Aquifers Report

Rima Petrossian, Ph.D., P.G., C.P.G., Manager of the Groundwater Technical Assistance Group of the Texas Water Development Board and her team just released: Texas Water Development Board Groundwater Management Report 17-01; TWDB Trans-Border Aquifers Report: A Summary of Aquifer Properties, Policies, and Planning Approaches for Texas, Surrounding States, and Mexico (here). Dr. Petrossian also serves as Vice President – Western Texas, of the American Institute of Professional Geologists.

Groundwater in Texas is a valuable natural resource shared with eight national and international states: New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, in the United States; and Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila de Zaragoza, and Chihuahua, in Mexico. Of the 30 Texas aquifers that provide groundwater, 23 are shared with one or more other states. Internationally, Mexico and Texas share four major aquifers and three minor aquifers, based on the Texas definition of aquifers.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed the Railroad Commission’s Sunset Bill, House Bill 1818 (HB 1818) into law May 22, 2017 reauthorizing the RRC for 12 more years until Sept. 1, 2029. The bill also provides the agency with the authority to assess pipeline safety fees to support its pipeline safety regulatory program; jurisdiction over preventing interstate pipeline damage and a mandate to publish an annual oil and gas monitoring report.

Under this legislation, the RRC’s Oil & Gas Division is directed to develop and publish an oil and gas monitoring strategic annual plan each fiscal year to ensure the agency’s resources are used to protect public safety and the environment. The RRC is directed to publish this report on its website by July 1, 2017 preceding each state fiscal year.

The State Legislature is now in session. The following is a list of bills of potential interest to geologists. There are 15 new bills of interest this week. The deadline for the unrestricted filing of bills and joint resolutions other than local bills, emergency appropriations, and bills that have been declared an emergency by the governor was Friday, March 10, 2017. Therefore, few new bills are anticipated this session, but we will continue to look for new bills of interest in case they come up. New information is listed in bold:
