2016 Darcy Lecture: “Rethinking the Relationship Between Data, Models, and Decision-Making” to be Presented in Houston and Austin in September

The Groundwater Division of the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) is pleased to sponsor the 2016 Darcy Lecture, “Rethinking the Relationship Between Data, Models, and Decision-making,” presented by Ty Ferré, Ph.D. of the University of Arizona.

The lecture will be held on Tuesday evening, September 13, 2016 in Houston and then again on Friday, September 16, 2016, in Austin at the Stephen F. Austin Building, 1700 North Congress Avenue, Room 170, at 10:00 a.m.

Ferré’s lecture will build from the basic concepts of decision science to present concepts and recent developments in optimal design of hydrogeologic monitoring networks. He will also discuss how hydrogeologic models can be used for decision support under uncertainty. Finally, he will show that focusing hydrogeologic analysis on the specific, practical problems of interest can guide optimal measurement selection, advance hydrogeologic science, and improve the integration of science into economic and policy decisions.

The Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecture Series in Groundwater Science was named in honor of Henry Darcy of France for his 1856 investigations that established the physical basis upon which groundwater hydrogeology has been studied ever since. Since its establishment in 1986 by the National Ground Water Association, the series has reached more than 85,000 groundwater students, faculty members, and professionals.

AIPG members are welcome to attend this lecture hosted by the Houston Geological Society’s Environmental and Engineering Group. Be sure to register to reserve a seat.
