Mineral Commodities

Information on various commodities of primary interest to the members of the Texas Section of the AIPG, and others as well, e.g., uranium, thorium, rare earths, coal, oil and natural gas, geothermal energy and groundwater, albeit drinking water availability or contamination thereof, or brine to be disposed via injection wells or by other methods.

Some of the information will be provided via the I2M Web Portal, which is an interactive portal from which you can obtain information or a device you can manage to contribute reports or papers in PDF format or websites as URLs. The Portal is made available to the members of the AIPG, I2M Clients, Associates, geoscientists and the general public worldwide with a focus on scientific topics selected by the management of I2M. To date, the Portal contains more than 3,000 online reports, news items, etc. of interest to geoscientists and others.

C. Texas Aquifers

November – 2015 – Groundwater as a Commodity (here) was prepared by Dr. Rima Petrossian, P.G., C.P.G., the Vice President, West Texas, of the AIPG Texas Section. It is intended to be dynamic report, in that, the contents may be updated from to to time as new information becomes available. Your comments are invited.

December – 2014 – The publication, Growth Faulting and Subsidence in the Houston, Texas Area, has been released after more than 10 years of research and discussions among the geological community in the Houston area (more), which is consistent with the goals of the IET Sponsored Research Program. The Guide was produced by I2M’s Chief Geologist and Principal Hydrogeologist, Michael D. Campbell, P.G., P.H., C.P.G.,; by I2M’s Project Manager & Mining / Environmental Geological Associate, M. David Campbell, P.G.; by I2M’s Senior Engineering and Environmental Associate, Richard C. Bost, P.E., P.G.; and by Henry M. Wise, P.G. C.P.G., Senior Geologist and Remedial Services Senior Specialist for SWS Environmental Services, in La Porte, Texas. The number of views of the report has exceeded 400 since its release (more).

June, 2011 – Aquifers of Texas – Report 380 (more) by Peter G. George, Ph.D., P.G.; Robert E. Mace, Ph.D., P.G.; and Rima Petrossian, Ph.D., P.G., C.P.G. of the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB). This report is an update to the TWDB Report 345, Major and Minor Aquifers of Texas, published in 1995 and coauthored by John B. Ashworth and Janie Hopkins. Since the publication of that report more than 15 years ago, a great deal of information has become available through research at universities, state and federal agencies, and private environmental engineering firms as part of the TWDB’s Groundwater Availability Modeling Program.

The aquifer summaries are short descriptions covering geology, hydrology, and water use, based largely on reports generated through the Groundwater Availability Modeling Program. The summaries are preceded by sections on groundwater in Texas, including the monitoring and modeling programs at the TWDB, a discussion of statewide groundwater issues, a summary of groundwater management in the state, and basic groundwater principles.
