CIVILIZATION AND THE TECTONICS OF THE AEGEAN REGION: 12:00 Noon CST

John Berry, P.G., C.P.G. member of the Board of Directors of the AIPG Texas Section will report on the Aegean area, the cradle of the European civilization. It is also an area of active ongoing tectonics, and this geological activity has had profound consequences for western civilization, from the time of its origin myths onwards. After a general review of the tectonic history, Mr. Berry will focus on three specific areas whose geology has had such consequences: the island of Santorini, Macedonia and the Acropolis of Athens, which is comprised of limestones the same age as those around Austin.

This presentation is the third of four presentations covering the geology of central Europe from north to south: the previous ones were on the Permian Basin of Northern Europe and the Carpathians of Romania and Hungary. This presentation brings us down to the southern tip of Europe. The fourth presentation will be on the Alpine-Apennine Orogeny that abuts to the west the three areas discussed previously.
